Papa Joe Smiddy.

here we come…

I have often told the story that my Big-Stone-Gap-reared grandmother Emma (pictured left)  believed that only the very best of people came from Virginia.  As an homage to Grandma Emma (& penance for having married someone from Wisconsin), I keep an eye out for ways to give back to the great State of Virginia.

This year we were given the opportunity to perform at one of our favorite vacation spots, Natural Tunnel State Park.  We played a Tunnel Lighting in June, and we’ll be playing another one near Thanksgiving.  Plus, we are so proud to have been one of only five Featured Performers for Pickin’ in the Park series at the Amphitheater this Summer.  So, you can just imagine our delight when we received the Call that of the five Featured Performers…

…the Pea Pickin’ Hearts were chosen
to perform as the opener at the
Papa Joe Smiddy Mountain Music Festival
over the long Labor Day Weekend!

“The Papa Joe Smiddy Mountain Music Festival is a celebration of Appalachian music. Old Time & Bluegrass music have a long history in the mountains of Appalachia, and the Cove Ridge Foundation wants to preserve these traditions as well as instill a passion for them in our youth. The Festival is named for University of Virginia at Wise Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Joseph C. “Papa Joe” Smiddy, a well-known educator, entertainer, and old time musician. The Cove Ridge Foundation has also established a scholarship in honor of “Papa Joe” as part of their efforts to educate younger generations on Appalachian musical heritage.” — from
